SEOUL, KOREA - It has been confirmed that Samsung’s offer to take over Japan-based SHARP’s copy machine business was finally turned down.
A source from the related industry said on March 13th that Samsung sounded out its intention to take over SHARP’s copier business part in the process of negotiating with the Japanese company to make a capital tie-up. Putting its eye on copy machine and digital camera businesses as new growth sectors following Smartphone and other IT gadgets, the local electronics giant had a plan to advance into the global copy machine market currently dominated by Japanese companies after acquiring the world’s 5th copy machine maker, SHARP.
A person from Samsung said, “We voiced our intention to take it over, but the final negotiation broke down.” The final price Samsung offered to SHARP is not known, but it has been reported that many of the employees from the Japanese company had opposed the plan.
The Japanese press has said that Samsung was so into the copy machine business when negotiating with SHARP for a capital tie-up and predicted that the Korean home appliances giant would possibly engage in the management to pressurize SAHRP to sell out its copier business.

13일 업계에 따르면 샤프와의 자본 제휴 협상과정에서 샤프의 복사기 사업 인수를 타진했다. 삼성전자는 스마트폰 등 IT기기에 이은 성장 분야로 복사기와 디지털카메라를 주목, 세계 5위의 샤프 복사기 사업을 인수해 일본 기업들이 우위를 점하고 있는 복사기 시장을 공략하려는 계획이었다.
삼성전자 관계자는 “인수는 타진했으나 최종 협상은 샤프가 거절했다”고 말했다. 삼성이 제시한 인수 가격은 알려지지 않았다. 샤프 내부에서 반대 분위기가 많았던 것으로 전해졌다.
일본 외신은 삼성측이 샤프와의 이번 자본제휴 교섭에서 가장 흥미를 보인 것은 복사기 사업으로 보이며, 앞으로 샤프 경영 관여를 통해 복사기 사업 매각을 압박할 가능성이 있다고 관측했다.
삼성전자와 샤프는 지난 6일 샤프가 삼성전자 일본법인에 이달 안으로 지분 3%(103억엔)를 제3자 할당 증자 방식으로 투자하고, 삼성전자에 대한 LCD 패널 공급을 확대하는 내용의 자본·업무 제휴 내용을 발표한 바 있다.
