Seoul, Korea - A weather forecasting service that provides the weather information in much narrower geographical focus is soon to be provided.
SK Planet announced on the 24th that it will start to provide weather information on more narrowly divided areas through its Weather Platform service. The new weather service was conceived as one of the company’s in-house venture programs, and its pilot service is soon to be started.
The Weather Platform uses the weather sensors installed in each mobile telecommunication base stations to provide more localized weather information. The service was conceived by an idea to provide a more reliable and accurate weather information, as the weather is becoming more and more unpredictable and localized extreme weather frequented due to the global warming.
SK Planet plans to piggyback the weather sensors on SK Telecom’s some 300 base stations in Seoul to start the pilot service in two versions, one personal and the other for corporate use. Once the business feasibility is proven throughout the pilot service, the weather sensors will be installed to the base stations nationwide.

이동통신 기지국 단위별로 날씨를 확인할 수 있는 기상서비스가 등장한다.
SK플래닛은 사내벤처 프로그램 중 하나인 ‘웨더 플랫폼’을 통해 세부 지역별 기상정보 제공이 가능한 기상플랫폼의 시범서비스를 선보일 계획이라고 24일 밝혔다.
웨더플랫폼은 이동통신 기지국마다 기상센서를 부착해 기존보다 세분화된 지역별 날씨정보를 제공한다. 특정지역의 기습성 호우 등 국지성 기상이변이 잦아지면서 이에 대한 정확한 날씨정보를 제공하자는 취지에서 추진됐다.
SK플래닛은 서울시 300여곳의 SK텔레콤 이동통신 기지국에 기상센서를 부착해 시범서비스를 선보일 계획이다. 애플리케이션 형태로 일반 사용자용 버전과 기업용 버전을 분리해 서비스한다. 기지국별 기상센서 구축이 안 된 나머지 지역에 대해서는 기상청과 기상서비스 사업자의 날씨정보를 받아 서비스 할 예정이다.
이번 시범서비스는 기상 플랫폼의 비즈니스 가능성을 타진하기 위한 것으로 서비스 시나리오가 검증되면 기상센서를 전국망으로 확대해 상용화할 계획이다. SK플래닛은 홍수 재해 및 국지성 기상이변에 민감한 재난방재 공공기관과 택배 물류산업에 진출이 가능할 것으로 예상하고 있다. T맵, 11번가 등 다른 플랫폼과의 융합을 통해 새로운 시너지 창출도 검토 중이다.
SK플래닛 관계자는 “웨더플랫폼은 기지국별 세부 날씨를 서비스하는 장점이 있다”며 “이를 중소 개발사들에게 공개해 새로운 날씨 컨버전스 서비스가 나올 수 있도록 할 계획”이라고 말했다.
