SEOUL, KOREA – Hyundai Rotem, a subsidiary of auto giant Hyundai Motor Group, said Tuesday it has won a contract for the supply of 636 subway carriages to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the state-owned operator of the Delhi Metro in India.
Hyundai Rotem said this is India’s largest-ever train project worth about KRW 1 trillion. Under the contract, it will deliver a total of 636 trains by 2017 to the state-run DMRC for the city’s two new subway lines, No. 7 and No. 8.
There was fierce competition for the lucrative deal. Hyundai Rotem beat out global heavyweights, such as Canada’s Bombardier, France’s Alstom and Germany’s Siemens, to bag this deal. Hyundai Rotem could outshine its powerful rivals, especially the world’s largest train maker Bombardier, with its advanced power efficiency technology. Hyundai Rotem received the highest score in power efficiency among the bidders.
Hyundai Rotem broke into the Indian market in 2001 for the first time when it won a contract to supply about 280 carriages.

현대로템, 1조원 규모 인도 전동차 사업 수주
현대로템(대표 한규환)은 인도 델리 지하철공사(DMRC)가 발주한 1조원 규모의 `델리 메트로 3기 전동차 사업`을 수주했다고 2일 밝혔다.
이번 사업은 2017년까지 인도 델리 메트로 신규 7, 8호선에 투입될 전동차 636량을 납품하는 프로젝트다. 인도 단일 전동차 발주건 중 공급량 기준으로는 역대 최대 규모다.
현대로템은 캐나다 봄바르디에, 프랑스 알스톰, 독일 지멘스 등 세계 전동차 `빅3`와 스페인 카프, 일본 가와사키중공업 등 주요 업체들과의 경쟁에서 승리했다. 전력소비효율 등에서 참가업체 중 최고점을 받은 현대로템은 사업 수주와 함께 전동차 품질 및 기술경쟁력이 세계 수준으로 도약했음을 증명했다.
현대로템은 지난 2001년 델리 메트로 전동차 280량을 수주하며 인도 시장에 첫 발을 내디딘 이후 10여년 만에 수주량을 1283량으로 늘렸다. 또 발주량 기준 점유율 60%를 달성, 봄바르디에를 제치고 인도 시장 점유율 1위에 올랐다.
현대로템 관계자는 “델리 메트로 3기 사업 수주로 기술과 품질이 입증된 만큼 델리 메트로 5, 6호선 추가 전동차 공급건을 포함한 인도 사업 전망이 한층 밝아졌다”고 말했다.
