SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung Electronics’ OS choice for its smart home appliances is Linux while LG Electronics’ is Android. As the importance of OS gets bigger in tandem with the emergence of intelligent home appliances, the two global home appliance giants’ different OS strategies have gained attention. Smart home appliances are still in their infancy. Some point out that Samsung and LG have to urgently hammer out their mid- and long-term smart home appliance OS master plans.
Samsung Electronics’ high-end smart washing machines and refrigerators run on Linux-based, Samsung-specific OS “Linux 2.6.32.13” and CPUs have been supplied by Korean fabless chip maker Nexell Co. As Samsung has unveiled Android-based smartphones as well as the Linux-based Tizen phone, Samsung desires to secure its own OSs in the smartphone business. Samsung also uses its own Linux-based OS for its smart TVs.
LG’s smart home appliances are based on the Android OS. LG Refrigerators come with the Android OS and fabless IC company Telechips’ processor. Using Android as the basic OS for its home appliances, LG Electronics looks to underline its swift response to the market. In the smart TV sector, LG focuses on products based on LG’s own platform “Netcast” while reinforcing its “multi OS” strategy by launching the Android-based Google TV.
Though Samsung opts for Linux and LG for Android at the moment, the two home appliance manufacturers said that they have yet to finalize their mid and long-term OS plans.
In the smart home appliance sector, the importance of OS is expected to grow further, fueled by the spread of the “smart home” concept and emphasis on remote-controlled home appliances and home appliances' interoperability and interconnectivity. A home appliance producer’s OS strategy will serve as the key to differentiating its home appliance products’ services from the others. For instance, if Samsung washing machines, refrigerators and ovens are interlinked, unique services can be provided.

삼성전자와 LG전자의 스마트가전 운용체계(OS)가 각각 `리눅스`와 `안드로이드`로 엇갈리고 있다. 폰과 TV에 이어 냉장고•세탁기•에어컨 등 가전도 `스마트 시대`에 진입하면서 OS의 중요성이 커지는 가운데 양사 OS 전략이 달리 나타나고 있어 주목된다. 스마트가전은 아직 도입 초기다. 삼성•LG의 중장기 스마트가전 `OS 대계(大計)`가 시급하다는 지적도 나온다.
3일 업계에 따르면 삼성전자 프리미엄급 스마트세탁기와 냉장고는 리눅스 기반 자체 OS를 탑재했다. OS는 오픈소스인 리눅스를 기본으로 삼성전자에 특화된 OS `리눅스2.6.32.13`가 사용됐다. CPU는 넥셀의 칩을 채택했다. 스마트폰에서 구글 `안드로이드` 제품과 함께 리눅스를 기초로 하는 `바다`에 이어 `타이젠`까지 선보인 삼성전자다. 스마트폰에서 자체 OS 확보 욕구가 크다. 삼성은 스마트TV에서도 리눅스 기반의 자체 OS를 사용 중이다.
LG전자 스마트가전은 안드로이드 OS가 기본이다. LG냉장고는 안드로이드 OS에다 텔레칩스의 프로세서를 탑재했다. 안드로이드는 스마트폰에서 가장 많은 사용자를 갖고 있다. LG전자는 스마트폰에 이어 가전에서도 안드로이드를 기본 OS로 사용하면서 빠른 대응을 강조한다. LG전자는 스마트TV에서는 자체 OS인 `넷캐스트` 제품을 주력으로 하면서 구글과 협력해 안드로이드 기반 `구글TV`도 가장 앞서 출시하는 등 `멀티 OS` 전략을 강화하고 있다.
가전업계 관계자는 “삼성전자는 스마트가전에서 자체 OS를 확보하려는 욕구가 크고, LG전자는 다른 기기에서 활용도가 검증된 안드로이드로 연결성을 강조하는 모습”으로 해석했다.
초기 스마트가전 OS는 `삼성-리눅스, LG-안드로이드`로 엇갈렸다. 하지만 두 회사 모두 스마트가전에서 중장기 OS 대응 방침까지 확정한 것은 아니라고 밝혔다. 아직까지 최상의 조합을 찾아가는 과정이라는 설명이다.
스마트가전에서 OS 중요성은 꾸준히 높아질 전망이다. `스마트 홈` 개념이 확산되고 있고 원격지 가전제어 이외에 개별 기기를 뛰어넘어 가정 내 제품군 간 호환•연결성도 강조되는 추세다.
특히 OS 전략은 자사 가전제품군의 서비스 차별화를 위한 핵심수단으로 꼽힌다. 예를 들어 삼성 브랜드의 세탁기와 냉장고, 오븐까지 연계하면서 독특한 서비스를 제공하는 게 가능할 수 있다.
가전업계 관계자는 “자사 브랜드 가전제품군을 묶어 특화 기능을 제공한다면 단일 기기가 아닌 자기 제품군 전반에서 충성도 높은 고객을 갖게 된다”며 “스마트가전 확산과 기술진화를 감안할 때, 가전사의 중장기 가전 OS 전략 중요성은 앞으로 더욱 커질 수밖에 없다”고 말했다.
