SEOUL, KOREA - GS EPS Co., a GS Group company specializing in renewable electricity generation, will build Asia's largest biomass power plant. The company said on May 13 it held a groundbreaking ceremony on the same day to build a fourth 100-megawatt power generation plant in Dangjin based on biofuel at the cost of 300 billion won. The plant will be operational by August 2015.

Biomass is biological material from living organisms, referring to plants or plant-derived materials. As a renewable energy source, biomass can either be used directly, or indirectly-—once or converted into another type of energy product such as biofuel. The biomass power plant to be built by GS EPS will use wood chips, cotton stalks, grass, and agricultural waste as fuels.

GS Group chairman Huh Chang-soo said, "In a difficult time like now, we must be able to invest long term to prepare for the future. With the biomass power plant construction as a momentum, we should turn our attention more toward environment projects."
