It has been reported that the flat display market would continue to grow despite the recession. Even if it is hard to expect the market as a whole to pick up anytime soon, UHD, OLED and other innovative displays are believed to help boost the market.
HIS Electronics & Media (Displaybank), a market research company, held ‘Korea Display Conference’ on June 12 and anticipated the flat display market would go up by 3~10% annually until 2017.
The market researcher expects the market to increase by 8% from last year, posting USD 140 billion (KRW 158.8 trillion) in sales this year. Next year will see the market further grow by 10%, standing at USD 153.7 billion (KRW 174.3 trillion).
Large-sized OLED panels are believed to lead the market growth next year. Except for PDP, the LCD market is going to show a steady growth as well.
As for products, the Smart pad (tablet PC) market is going to register a remarkable growth while the TV market is expected to sustain a slight growth momentum in terms of sales and shipments.
The production capacity will be expanded mainly by China. In particular, Chinese 8th generation (2200×2500㎜) LCD production capacity is increasing at a tremendous speed. The nation’s 8th generation LCD production capacity stood at 2.9 million ㎡ in terms of the gross size in the 2nd quarter this year. The number, however, is to triple to be 8.6 million ㎡ by the 4th quarter of 2015.
The market of large –sized TV panels over 50 inches is posting a considerable growth as well. The expected number of large-sized UHD TVs to be sold will be about 2 million this year and 4.3 million next year.
“The tablet PC and large-sized TV markets are going to lead the display market growth in the future,” says Kwon Sang-sae, the CEO of Displaybank.

불황 속에서도 평판 디스플레이 시장이 당분간 꾸준하게 성장할 것이라는 전망이 나왔다. 경기 회복은 기대하기 어렵지만, 초고선명(UHD)·유기발광다이오드(OLED) 등 기술 혁신을 통해 상승세를 이끌어갈 것으로 기대된다.
시장조사 업체인 IHS전자&미디어(디스플레이뱅크)는 12일 코엑스에서 `코리아디스플레이콘퍼런스2013`을 개최하고 오는 2017년까지 평판 디스플레이 시장이 매년 3~10%씩 성장할 것으로 바라봤다.
올해는 지난해보다 8% 성장한 1400억달러(약 158조8000억원)를 형성할 것으로 바라봤으며, 내년에는 10%나 더 늘어난 1537억달러(약 174조3000억원) 규모가 될 것으로 예측했다.
내년 시장 성장세는 대면적 OLED 디스플레이가 견인할 것으로 분석했다. PDP를 제외하고 LCD 시장 역시 꾸준하게 성장한다고 관측했다.
제품별로는 스마트패드(태블릿PC) 시장 성장률이 압도적으로 높을 것으로 보인다. TV 시장은 매출액과 출하량 기준으로도 소폭이나마 성장세를 유지할 전망이다.
생산 능력 확대는 중국이 주도할 것으로 예상된다. 특히 중국의 8세대(2200×2500㎜) LCD 생산 능력은 무서운 속도로 증가하는 상태다. 올해 2분기 중국의 8세대 생산 능력은 면적기준 290만㎡이지만, 내년 2분기에는 520만㎡, 2015년 4분기에는 지금의 3배 수준인 860㎡으로 각각 늘어난다. BOE와 CSOT, CEC판다 등 현지 업체들외에도 삼성디스플레이와 LG디스플레이가 중국에 생산 라인을 가동하기 때문이다.
50인치 이상 대형 TV 패널 시장의 성장률도 주목할 만하다. 대면적 UHD TV 패널 시장은 올 해 200만 대 정도를 형성할 것으로 예상되며 내년에는 배인 430만대로 늘어날 전망이다.
권상세 디스플레이뱅크 사장은 “태블릿PC 시장과 대면적 TV 시장이 앞으로 디스플레이 시장 성장을 이어갈 요소”라고 설명했다.
