SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Rotem, the rolling stock manufacturer, will expand into a whole new area of electronic and mechanic (E&M) software development and implementation. The company said on June 18 that it has signed an agreement with the Korea Rail Network Authority to supply 46 light rail cars for the latter's Gimpo light rail transit system while installing E&M systems for the cars.
The 23.6-kilometer Gimpo light rail project will connect Gimpo New Town with Gimpo International Airport, with nine stations and one railroad depot in between. The project will cost a total of 1,655.3 billion won. Of this, Hyundai Rotem will be responsible for the light rail cars and software systems at the cost of 200 billion won.
The company has begun its software business since 2004 when it won the E&M project for Seoul's No. 9 subway line. It also won a 35-billion-won E&M order in 2011 for Kazakhstan's Almaty Metro. Separately the company will sign a contract on the 19th to supply 70 electric locomotives (130 billion won) for Greater Wellington Rail Ltd., a public-sector company in Wellington, New Zealand.
