SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung Petrochemical Co. and the SGL Group, the largest carbon fiber manufacturer in Europe, will build a joint venture engaged in carbon fiber composite materials. Accordingly, Samsung Petrochemical Co. is joining Hyosung and Taekwang Industrial Co. in launching into the cutting-edge carbon fiber business. Above all, Samsung Petrochemical Co., albeit a latecomer to the carbon fiber industry, can overcome latecomer disadvantages on the coattails of demands arising from within Samsung Group.
Samsung Petrochemical Co. announced on Thursday that it and Germany’s SGL Group struck a strategic partnership to set up joint venture “Samsung SGL Carbon Composite Materials.”
The SGL Group, specializing in carbon materials, grossed 1.7 billion euros in 2012 sales. The joint venture will focus on sales and marketing activities and also create new demands. Samsung Petrochemical and SGL Group will each hold a 50% stake in the joint venture. The joint venture will be headquartered in Samsung Petrochemical’s facility located in Ulsan, South Korea. The marketing & sales office for the joint venture will be put up in Seoul, South Korea.
The cooperation is expected to guarantee a sustainable, long-term supply of carbon fiber materials to Samsung Petrochemical Co. For a start, the joint venture will supply its products to Samsung affiliates. In the mid-term, the joint venture will aim for business expansion into the rest of Asia.
Juergen Koehler, member of the Board of Management of SGL Group, said : “Our joint venture underlines our strategy to enter new markets and develop innovative applications for our high-performance materials.”

삼성석유화학, 독일 SGL 그룹과 합작해 탄소섬유 회사 설립
삼성석유화학이 탄소섬유 복합소재 사업을 위해 유럽 최대 탄소 복합재 기업인 독일 SGL그룹과 합작법인을 설립한다. 효성•태광산업 등에 이어 삼성이 첨단소재인 탄소섬유 사업에 본격 진출하는 신호탄이다. 특히 삼성은 그룹 내 수요를 등에 업고 후발 주자의 한계를 조기 극복할 수 있다는 점에서 주목된다.
삼성석유화학(대표 정유성)은 독일 SGL그룹과 탄소섬유 복합소재 사업을 위한 전략적 파트너십을 구축하고 합작법인 `삼성SGL탄소복합재`를 설립하기로 했다고 20일 밝혔다.
SGL그룹은 탄소 관련 제품 전문기업으로, 지난해 매출은 17억유로(약 2조5820억원)에 이른다. 합작법인은 판매와 마케팅을 주력으로 하며 신규 수요 창출 역할도 맡는다. 지분은 SGL과 삼성석유화학이 각각 50%를 보유한다. 합작사 본사는 삼성석유화학 사업장이 있는 울산에 설립한다. 마케팅 및 판매를 위한 사무소는 서울에 둘 예정이다.
탄소섬유는 무게가 철의 4분의 1에 불과하지만 강도는 10배나 강한 미래 첨단소재다. 최근 산업재•전자소재로 적극 채택되면서 시장이 커졌다. 특히 에너지 저감을 위해 소재 경량화가 핵심 과제로 떠오르면서 탄소섬유 시장 경쟁도 치열해지고 있다. 이미 국내에서는 태광•효성•도레이첨단소재 등이 탄소섬유 양산을 시작하며 경쟁을 벌이고 있다.
이번 제휴에 따라 삼성석유화학은 장기적으로 탄소섬유 복합재의 안정적인 공급망을 확보할 수 있게 됐다. 합작법인은 우선 가전제품•의료장비•엔지니어링 장비 등 삼성 계열사들에 제품을 공급할 계획이다. 중장기적으로는 국내 시장을 넘어 아시아 전역으로 시장을 넓힐 예정이다.
위르겐 쾰러 SGL그룹 탄소섬유•복합재사업부 사장은 “이번 합작법인은 새로운 시장 진출과 신소재 개발을 위한 중요한 교두보가 될 것”이라고 말했다.
정유성 삼성석유화학 사장은 “SGL과 합작법인 설립으로 우선 탄소섬유 복합소재의 안정적인 공급망을 구축한 것에 큰 의미가 있다”며 “SGL은 탄소섬유 관련 전체 생산기술을 보유하고 있어 시너지를 낼 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
