SEOUL, KOREA – The South Korean government will scale up its efforts to promote the purchase of electric vehicles (EV) in the private sector. The government will expand government subsidies on EVs, which have been limited to the public sector for the past 3 years, to the private sector. Since 5-6 EV models are scheduled to go on sale early next year, the domestic EV market is anticipated to make headway.
The Ministry of Environment (ME) said Tuesday that at least 300 EVs will be distributed to the private sector in 10 leading EV-promoting cities, including Seoul, Daejeon, Jeju, Pohang and Gwangju.
About 500 EVs, including 160 units allotted to Jeju Island, will be distributed to the private sector. The 10 leading EV-promoting cities will submit their plans to bump up the distribution of EVs and EVs will be distributed via municipalities starting from July. Purchasers of EVs will receive a government subsidy of KRW 15 million, a municipality subsidy of KRW 8 million - 15 million and one EV charger (worth below KRE 8 million). Therefore, consumers can purchase an EV (plus a charger) at around KRW 20 million.

올해 민간 전기차 보급대수 500대…민간 시장 열린다
정부가 민간 대상으로 전기자동차 보급사업을 확대한다. 공공기관 보급사업 3년 만에 일반인에게도 정부•지방자치단체의 차량 구매 보조금이 지원되는 셈이다. 내년 초까지 5~6종의 완성차 출시를 앞두고 있어 국내 전기차 시장도 기지개를 켤 것으로 전망된다.
환경부는 다음 달부터 10개 전기차 선도도시(서울•당진•창원•광주•대전•영광•춘천•안산•제주•포항)를 대상으로 최소 300대 이상의 전기차 민간 보급을 실시한다고 25일 밝혔다.
이달부터 민간 보급을 추진한 제주특별자치도의 160대를 포함하면 올해만 약 500대의 차량을 민간에서 운영하는 셈이다. 환경부는 당초 민간 보급 물량 100대에서 제주 등 지자체의 구매계획 물량이 늘면서 300대로 늘렸다.
10개 선도도시로부터 보급 계획을 수렴해 이달 지원차량 수를 확정하고 7월부터 지자체를 통해 보급할 계획이다. 차량 구매자는 국비보조금(1500만원)을 포함해 지자체 추가 보조금(800만~1500만원)과 완속충전기 1기(800만원 이하)를 지원받게 된다. 결국 2000만원대 초•중반에서 전기차와 충전기를 확보할 수 있다.
논란이 됐던 급속충전기 국내표준도 우선 기아차 `레이EV`와 르노삼성의 `SM3 ZE`에 맞춰 일본 `차데모(CHAdeMO)`와 르노의 `교류 3상` 표준 채택을 결정했다. 향후 GM의 `스파크EV`와 BMW `I3`, 폴크스바겐 `전기차 골프` 출시에 따라 북미•유럽의 `직류 콤보 타입1` 표준도 추가할 방침이다. 국내 급속충전기 표준이 결정됨에 따라 국내 충전기 시장 활성화에도 속도가 붙을 전망이다.
박광칠 환경부 전기자동차보급팀장은 “올해 친환경 전기차 보급사업은 실제로 구매를 원하는 민간에 집중돼 7월부터 전기차 구매가 가능할 것”이라며 “지난 3년간 공공대상 보급사업을 충전인프라 등 민간 운영에 필요한 기반이 갖춰졌고 향후 민간 보급은 점차 확대해 나가겠다”고 말했다.
