SEOUL, KOREA- Daewoo Engineering & Construction said on August 12 in a regulatory filing that it had won a 1,971-billion-won (US$1.77-billion) order to build a large coal-fired power plant near the city of Safi, 200 kilometers south of Casablanca, in Morocco.The Safi Energy Company-commissioned project calls for building a 1,320-megawatt power plant and amenities on the coast about 15 kilometers away from the city. The company will complete the project in 46 months after the construction is underway.
Daewoo E&C entered the Moroccan market in 1998 when it built plants for Daewoo Electronics and Daewoo Motors. After a hiatus, it won a large-scale project in 2010 to build a coal-powered power plant in Jorf Lasfar at $1,020 million. The company then landed another deal worth $328 million to build a fertilizer plant in Jorf Lasfar, a town near El Jadida. The total amount of orders booked in Morocco thus far is $3,461 million.
