The global LCD panel market is forecast to mark a negative growth, with Chinese companies making bigger forays into the business area.
Against this backdrop, Korea's display maker such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which have been leading this business area, plan to solidify leadership through massive investment in flexible OLED panels.
According to market research firm DisplaySearch on August 2, the global sales of flat panel display (FPD) which accounts for the most in the global display market is forecast to decline by 2 percent to $129 billion this year from $131.4 billion a year ago.
This is because of the decline in display panel prices, plus the decrease in demand from PC area. In contrast, the OLED market is forecast to grow sharply this year, emerging as a mainstream panel market. The global AMOLED market is likely to grow by 22 percent to more than $450 million this year.
To cope with the change in market environment, Korea’s display companies are planning to make massive investment in OLED areas, centering on flexible panels.
