SEOUL, KOREA - Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has won a US$500-million deal to build five very large crude carriers from Scorpio Tankers Inc. of the United States. The company said this on December 16, adding that it would deliver the vessels by the first half of 2016. This is the first VLCC order in 23 months since it won an order in January last year.
The company said in a statement that the tankers will carry about 300,000 tons per vessel whose dimension is 336 meters in length and 60 meters in width. The ships will be equipped with high-efficiency engines with state-of-the-art technology to improve fuel efficiency.
Scorpio Tankers Inc. is a provider of marine transportation of petroleum products worldwide. It owns 19 tankers and time charters in 29 product tankers. The company has contracted for 65 newbuilding vessels, of which 45 are expected to be delivered in 2014.
