KT (Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu) signed a joint memorandum of understanding with Hyundai Heavy Industries Holding Co. (CEO Kwon Oh-gap), KAIST (President Shin Sung-chul), Hanyang University (President Kim Woo-seung), and Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Director Kim Myung-joon, in a conference room on the first floor of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) on February 20 and announced they will form an "AI One Team."
The signing ceremony of the MOU was attended by KT CEO-nominee Koo Hyun-mo, Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings Vice President Chung Ki-sun, KAIST President Shin Sung-chul, Hanyang University President Kim Woo-seung, ETRI President Kim Myung-joon and Second Vice Minister of Science, Technology, Information, and Communication Chang Suk-young. Each agency will cooperate in various ways to create an AI ecosystem and develop AI human resources.
The formed 'AI One Team' is planning to establish a human resources development platform, find and spread use cases for 'AI+X' application, create an AI open ecosystem, and establish the Alliance Secretariat.
AI is making fundamental changes in the industry as a key technology for digital innovation, and the speed and breadth of this change is expected to become faster and wider in the future.
South Korea is an advanced ICT country that succeeded in commercializing the world's first 5G and has enough infrastructure and technology to lead the fourth industrial revolution. However, the competition in the AI industry is centered around the U.S. and China, so Korea does not have the upper hand.
If this is left unattended, AI technologies and services that are introduced in South Korea will be lost to foreign businesses, and AI industries will be left behind.
"The way KT contributes to Korea in the era of AI and 5G is to help the people's lives and other industries innovate based on the network, ICT technology and AI technology we have," said Koo Hyun-mo, CEO-nominee of KT. "We will not spare support to help Korea become the No. 1 AI country in the fourth industrial revolution through AI One Team."
