SEOUL, KOREA - The won-dollar exchange rate has fallen below the 1,070-won level on January 2, the lowest in 16 months. Foreign currency watchers said it was due to high expectations that the "U.S. fiscal cliff" issue would be resolved soon, signalling the exchange rate would keep falling further.
At 10:57 am on the 2nd, the won-dollar exchange rate was 1,065.00 won, 5.60 won lower than the previous trading day. This is the lowest level since September 2, 2011 when the rate was 1,063 won (closing price).
Jeon Seung-ji, research analyst with Samsung Securities, said, "On the news of the impending settlement in the fiscal cliff stalemate, investors tend to move toward riskier assets. In addition to the won, the euro and Australian dollar are also showing strength against the U.S. dollar."
"The fiscal cliff issue will keep adding downward pressure on the exchange rate. In the near future, the rate would fall to the early 1,060s," she added.

환율, 16개월來 최저…1070원선 '붕괴'
원·달러 환율이 새해 첫 거래일부터 1070원선을 내주며 16개월래 최저 수준으로 떨어졌다.
외환시장전문가들은 재정절벽 협상안 타결에 대한 기대감을 반영한 것으로 당분간 원·달러 환율이 가파른 하락세를 지속할 것으로 전망하고 있다.
2일 오전 10시 57분 현재 원·달러 환율은 전 거래일보다 5.6원 내린 1065.00원에 거래되고 있다. 이는 지난 2011년 9월2일 1063원(종가 기준) 이후 가장 낮은 수준이다.
전승지 삼성증권 연구원은 "미국의 재정절벽 협상 타결 소식에 전반적인 위험자산 선호심리가 강화되고 있다"며 "원화뿐 아니라 유로화, 호주달러화 등도 미 달러화 대비 강세를 나타내고 있다"고 설명했다.
재정절벽 타결안은 1일 새벽 2시께(현지 시각) 미국 의회 상원에서 여야 합의로 89대 8로 통과했다. 추가 수정안 없이 하원에서도 표결을 진행할 예정이다.
전 연구원은 "재정절벽 협상에 대한 타결 전망이 환율에 지속적인 하락 재료로 작용할 것"이라며 "연초 효과로 환유른 1060원대 초반까지 가파른 하락세를 지속할 가능성이 크다"고 내다봤다.
