Despite a severe downturn in the domestic construction market, Korea's contractors have done well last year offsetting the slowdown at home with more overseas projects.
According to the Ministry of Land, Transportation, and Maritime Affairs and the Korea Institute of Construction Technology on January 10, the Korean construction industry was ranked seventh in 2012 among 23 national construction industries in terms of global competitiveness compiled by them. In 2011, Korea had been ninth in the ranking.
In the comprehensive ranking, the United States and China took the No. 1 and 2 positions, with Japan taking the 10th place. As for the competitiveness in infrastructure construction, Korea was ranked 10th, one notch higher than in 2011.
A ministry official said, "In order for the construction industry to be globally competitive, it is imperative to improve design capabilities while moving aggressively to new emerging markets."

한국 건설산업 경쟁력 7위
부동산 경기 침체에도 국내 건설사들의 해외 진출이 확대되면서 지난해 건설산업 경쟁력이 2011년보다 높아진 것으로 분석됐다.
국토해양부는 한국건설기술연구원과 함께 2012년 국내 건설산업의 글로벌 경쟁력 순위를 평가한 결과, 한국은 73.8점(미국 100점)으로 조사 대상 23개국 중 7위에 올랐다고 10일 발표했다. 이는 2011년(9위)보다 2단계 상승한 것이다.
종합평가에서 미국과 중국이 각각 1, 2위를 차지했으며 일본은 한국보다 3단계 낮은 10위에 그쳤다. 세부 지표인 ‘국가별 건설인프라 경쟁력’ 평가 결과에서는 중국이 1위, 미국이 2위를 기록했다. 한국은 2011년 11위에서 1단계 뛴 10위에 올랐다.
인프라 경쟁력 평가 항목 가운데 ‘건설 리스크’는 8위에서 4위로 상승했지만 ‘건설시장 성장률’은 7위에서 16위로 크게 떨어졌다. 세부 평가 항목인 ‘건설 제도’는 비교 대상 23개국 중 10위, ‘시장 안정성’은 14위에 그쳤다.
‘국가별 건설기업 역량평가’에서는 미국이 1위, 이탈리아가 2위를 차지했다. 한국은 2011년보다 5단계 상승한 7위에 올랐다. 이 밖에 ‘시공 경쟁력’과 ‘설계 경쟁력’은 각각 12위에서 8위, 19위에서 10위로 상승했다. 이는 시공과 설계 분야의 해외 매출 증가율이 높아졌기 때문이라는 게 국토부의 설명이다.
국토부 관계자는 “건설산업이 세계적인 경쟁력을 갖추기 위해 설계 분야의 기술력을 높이고 새로운 시장 개척 등에 적극 나서야 한다”고 말했다.
