SEOUL, KOREA - European automobile industry organizations demanded to the Korean government that non-tariff barriers be removed from the nation's car market.
The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA), and European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers' Association (ETRMA) released a joint statement, "Ahead of the EU-South Korean summit meeting, we at the European automobile industry call for more proactive measures to bring down trade barriers in Korea."
"We have long voiced concerns about difficulties of access to the Korean market because of non-tariff barriers of old and new. The European Commission and the governments of individual EU member countries must take measures immediately to reduce the barriers," they continued.
The Korean auto industry presumes that the non-tariff barriers to which the European automobile industry bodies refers include the difficulty of procuring parts and components for warranty service and a variety of certifications and inspections before going through the import procedure.
Currently, European car makers must go through a whole round of certification process such as environmental and safety standards even though they satisfied those of the EU. Imported parts and components must also earn certifications in Korea. The Korean industry association believes that the European car makers consider these as constituting non-tariff barriers.
