A parliamentary study said that mileage money worth 108.8 billion won for mobile telecom services expired without being used.
According to Rep. Jun Byung-hun (New Politics Alliance for Democracy), a member of the science, ICT, future planning, broadcasting & communications committee, on September 3, based on data submitted by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning, the total volume of unused customer mileage money for the two years and seven month period between January 2013 and July this year was 108.8 billion won.
The mileage money is accrued when a customer under a non-flat rate plan pays monthly bills. The customer can use the mileage to pay bills or any other additional service fees. The portion of unused mileage money will be expired when the customer do not take advantage of it for seven years. The mileage balance for KT was 54.5 billion won during the 31-month period, followed by SK Telecom with 44.7 billion won and 9.6 billion won for LG U+.
The National Assemblyman said, "Telecom service providers must come up with measures including notifying their customers that their mileage benefits would expire well before the expiration date."
