LG Electronics has adopted a two-horse strategy to regain its former position in the smartphone market. To reinvigorate its smartphone business in the second half of this year, LG is launching both low-cost and ultra-high-end models.
This move is part of its effort to revive its smartphone business which was marginally profitable in the second quarter of this year. LG Electronics announced on September 21 that it would launch the LG Class through three mobile carriers. Despite having relatively cheap retail price of about 300,000 won, the LG Class has premium-class design and features.
The LG Class has an 8-megapixel front camera which is mounted with an image sensor which is the same as the one used for LG’s premium smartphone G4. The LG Class also employs a 13-megapixel rear camera, higher than iPhone 6S’s 12 megapixels.
To highlight its high-end image, the LG Class is metallic-coated for its rear part and top and bottom surface. This is the first time for LG Electronics to apply metallic material for smartphone main frame.
LG Electronics also released another low-cost clamshell-type smartphone LG Wine Smart Jazz, targeting elderly consumers. This is the seventh model in LG’s Wine Phone series.
In addition to such low-cost models, LG Electronics is also preparing to launch a super phone whose quality will be superior to that of its premium G series. LG is expected to show off the ultra-high-end model in the new product launching show slated to be held on October 1 in New York.
