Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction said on March 17 that it has signed a contract with Busan Port Authority to supply 12 transfer cranes. It will be installed at the second- and fifth-stage dock on the west side of Busan New Port and plans to supply it by March 2022.

The new transfer crane is an equipment that loads or transports containers from terminal yards through remote unmanned operation. The Busan New Port, which opened in 2006, currently operates about 230 transfer cranes.

Of the total, all but 49 units supplied by Doosan Heavy Industries in the 1-1 phase in 2006 are Chinese products.

“We will supply domestically-made cranes to Busan New Port for the first time in about 15 years with this order,” said Park Hong-wook, head of the company’s power services BG.

The Busan Port Authority plans to order port facilities for local companies in the follow-up two- to six-phase project. The order will be placed in 2023 and will be opened in 2026.

According to the Second New Port Construction Basic Plan, which was announced by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in August 2019, a total of 12 more docks are expected to be built at Busan New Port and Incheon New Port to enhance the competitiveness of domestic ports.
